This Nikon Ai-S Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 came to me with a very small amount of oil on the aperture blades. It was only a trace, but oil on the blades tends to spread over time and can make the aperture sluggish, so I decided to open the lens and clean it.

Here is how the lens comes apart, so you can see what you get access to at each step.
1. Rear side: the light baffle and the rear group
From the mount side, I first removed the black rear light baffle. Under it sits the rear lens group, which unscrews as one unit.

2. Front side: the built-in hood and the front barrel
On the front, the barrel section carrying the built-in hood and the name ring (135mm 1:2.8 and the serial number) comes off. With it removed, the front lens group is exposed.

3. Taking out the front group
The front group is held by a retaining ring. I used a lens spanner on the ring and lifted the group out of the barrel.

4. Cleaning the aperture blades
With both the front and rear groups out, the aperture blades can be reached from both sides. I did not take the blades out. I wiped the oil off them in place with a foam swab dampened with anhydrous ethanol, working from the front.

The tip: on this lens you can reach the blades by removing only the front and rear lens groups. If the oil is light, that may be enough before going any deeper.
5. Reassembly
I put everything back in reverse order: front group, front barrel with the hood, then the rear group and the baffle.

The aperture blades are clean now.
Thank you very much for reading.
