The Leica Elmar 5cm f/3.5 is a small standard lens for Leica screw-mount (L39) cameras. This one is engraved “Leitz Elmar f=5cm 1:3,5”, with “Feet” and “Germany” on the mount. I worked on it in November 2024. This post is a short disassembly of the front of the lens, to clean one piece of glass inside. Not every old lens needs a big repair, and this one only needed a simple cleaning.

1. Opening the front
The glass in this lens is held in place by thin rings. With a black ring out of the front, you can see down to the glass, with the aperture lever still at the edge of the opening.

2. Lifting the glass out
The glass I wanted to clean was the second element from the front.
There is nothing to grip inside the lens, so I used a lens sucker, a thin rod with a small rubber tip and a rubber bulb on the end. The tip sticks to the glass, and the glass comes straight up and out. By this point two thin rings were lying on the mat.

3. The glass up close
Out of the lens and under the light, the surface shows a fine layer of specks. I can’t tell you exactly what they were.

4. Cleaning and putting it back
A quick wipe took the specks off, so it was only simple dirt. Then I put the glass back in the lens and refitted the rings. For this last part I wore gloves.

5. After

About a year after this cleaning, in November 2025, the lens went to a new owner in the United States as a Near Mint lens.
